Fabirc and Pattern Givaway for Five Easy Questions

Our Newest Patterns and A Jellyroll Givaway!

jill here... Okay Followers and Bloggers, sometimes we feel lonely.  We know you all are out there because we can read our statistical information BUT you don't always say much.  Here's your chance!  We've been making our latest samples to get our trunk show up and running.  Some of our second samples are the same as our originals, some we've changed up a bit.  If you answer the following five questions, you will have a random chance to win the "Wee Woodland" jelly roll by Keiki for Moda and all 4 of our newest patterns.  There needs to be at least 100 of you to comment or this won't fly (and then I'll have to think of something else).  Even our friends in the Ukraine, Australia and Venezuela are eligible.  Don't make me think any harder.  This is scientific research!

Yesterday we went searching for some interesting photography backgrounds.  The sun was not particularly cooperative and we weren't  able to set up the tripod so these are preliminary, but you can still get the picture (right?)!

1.  Do you prefer traditional or modern design?

2.  Do you buy quilting patterns?

3.  Do you buy quilting books?

Our newest baby NIBBLES presented flat out (and slightly out of focus).

Baby NIBBLES presented in a modern context.
4.  If you buy patterns, would you rather see the quilt represented totally "flat out" or would you prefer if     it had an artistic, not totally visible presentation?

BRIOCHE AND BAGUETTE punched up.

I bet you didn't know we had a beach in Ames!
5.  If you buy patterns, would you like to see more than one option on the cover?

In order to be eligible, all you need to do is answer all five of the questions simply.  You can embellish your answers if you wish.   We'll announce our winner next week along with the cutting instructions for "Dinner Plates".  Stay tuned!

  1. Hey first response! I like traditional done with a modern twist. I don't mean 'modern' for the sake of. I mean a genuine new interpretation. I usually buy patterns, but I have been known to buy a book because of the cover art. With books, like CDs there is usually only two good ones that you known of to begin with and another one that grows on you.
I am a little tired of the not completely visible photography going on now. It has become all about pretty and as a buyer of a product I want to see the full thing.

  2. Here's my 2 cents to help you reach 100:
    1. Modern design
    2. Rarely buy patterns since I design my own quilts.
    3. Definitely buy books!
    4. When I look at quilt pictures I usually prefer flat pictures that let me see all of the quilt. The draped ones you show here are good too since they are nicely staged and you can guess what the part of the quilt that isn't showing looks like.
    5. Mixed feelings on this one: I prefer one pic to keep things uncluttered but I know that alternate color variations or sizes are helpful to a lot of people.

Hope you get some good research results!

  3. 1. Do you prefer traditional or modern design?
I actually like both- but I think I like the clean colors that usually go with modern design. Being presented in pleasing colors usually causes me to select the pattern as much as design.

    2. Do you buy quilting patterns? I have not yet bought a stand alone pattern, I generally prefer to use free ones.

    3. Do you buy quilting books? Yes. I know this sounds weird since I said I like to use free patterns, but I will often buy the book of a blogger whose free patterns I like as a way to support them.

    4. If you buy patterns, would you rather see the quilt represented totally "flat out" or would you prefer if it had an artistic, not totally visible presentation?
Artistic presentation is fine as long as design elements are not hidden. Somewhere in the pattern it needs to show the whole thing though.

    5. If you buy patterns, would you like to see more than one option on the cover?
I choose from color more than design. Having multiple variations is more likely to result in me using a pattern.

  4. Thanks for asking!
    1. I prefer to sew modern quilts, although I love to LOOK at every kind of quilt. I love modern takes on traditional quilts, too.
    2. I do buy patterns, both in paper format and as PDF files. PDF is instant gratification, but I find I forget about them--out of sight, out of mind. I still prefer paper patterns.
    3. I do buy books, about 10 or so a year. I end up making things from roughly half the books I buy, and I have a giveaway now and then on my blog to share books that I am finished with to free up shelf space for--NEW BOOKS!
    4. Both! Artistic shots on the cover are quite appealing, but somewhere there needs to be a flat out shot of the quilt, like on the back cover.
    5. It is nice to see other options, but it's not a requirement for me to buy a pattern. I don't have a problem visualizing a quilt with different colors and prints, although I have known people who do.

Baby Nibbles is a sweet little quilt!
    Thanks for the giveaway.

  5. KathrynH says:

    1. I am a traditional quilting turning into a modern design quilter.

    2. Yes, I buy quilt patterns quite often.

    3. I do buy books, my criteria is I have to like a minimum of two designs in the book to justify the price.

    4. Probably flat out as I want to see all of the elements of the quilt.

    5. Oh yes, more than one option would be terrific on a pattern.

I promise to comment more! I met you both at quilt market in the spring and so think your patterns are the best!

  6. I agree, it gets lonely on my blog sometimes, too...

    1. I prefer traditional with a modern twist over truly modern improvisational or wonky.
    2. More than I should considering I have trouble "following" them. I do like to improvise!
    3. Yes, typically 6-8 a year. For all sorts of reasons, and yes, I do read them. Usually.
    4. Style shots are great, but there has to be a flat shot somewhere on front or back to give you the full view and feel of the quilt. Magazine patterns without a flat shot frustrate me!
    5. hmmm. I think it can get to be too much, maybe just one on front with thumbnails of options on back with materials listing...?

    ReplyDelete
  7. 1. Modern, definitely modern.
    2. Yes. I especially love buying PDF patterns because I don't have to pay for shipping and get the pattern almost instantly.
    3. Yes. I don't buy books with traditional patterns in them, though -- my quilting is pretty much exclusively modern/contemporary.
    4. Flat out. I will not buy a pattern unless I can see a flat-out picture of the quilt so that I can see what the whole design looks like. Artistic shots are pretty but not very useful.
    5. It doesn't really matter to me -- as long as I can see what the design is on the front of the pattern then actually seeing other options isn't important to me. I never make a quilt look exactly like the pattern anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  8. 1 Modern
    2 Not very often
    3 Yes - lots!
    4 Flat
5 Just one option on the front

  9. Hello, Jill --
1)I like the variety of making both traditional and modern quilts. 2)Yes, I buy patterns. 3)Yes, I buy quilting books. 4)I prefer a flat out view to get the whole idea. 5)I like to see more than one option of the quilt on the pattern cover. Thank you for having this little giveaway! My dinner plate fat quarters are waiting for cutting instructions.

  10. 1. My tastes are changing entirely to modern... and I have no place in my home for such quilts!
    2. No. I have a few, from many years back, but no longer feel the need to buy them when I see so many free designs, and inspiration on the Internet.
    3. Rarely. I used to buy books, but now have a nice library of quilting references and haven't seen anything I can't figure out on my own.
    4. I'm tempted to pick up and look at a pattern with a styled quilt on the cover, but as a guide to making the quilt, I want a flat picture of it in its entirety.
    5. One option on the cover would be sufficient.

Thanks for your generous giveaway. Fabric is always the most attractive item to try to win. I hope you're successful in getting the silent types to respond.

P.S. Saw pictures of two of your quilt designs in the latest Keepsake Quilting. Good for you!

  11. 1. Do you prefer traditional or modern design? Modern but I also do traditional designs punched up with interesting fabric.
    2. Do you buy quilting patterns? Yes
    3. Do you buy quilting books? Yes
    4. I prefer to see the quilt "flat out" so I can get an idea of it overall.
    5. Yes, I like to see more than one option on the pattern cover.

  12. 1.Started traditional but find I am open to whatever strikes me at the moment and it seems to be more modern at this time.
    2.Yes, more often than books.
3.Yes, but less often than patterns.
    4. I would like to see them flat out. Draped without wrinkles and 90% shown is fine.
    5. Only if the other sizes are markedly different than the size shown.

    ReplyDelete
  13. 1. Modern, but I also like semi traditional blocks rendered with a modern twist.
    2. I've bought a couple, but usually only for something that would be really tough to figure out on my own or something I think I can use as a basis for making a bunch of quilt patterns with.
    3. I think I only have 3 quilting books. With all the information available on the internet it seems sort of like a waste of money to buy a reference book.
    4. I'm visually drawn to the artistic shots, but I won't even consider buying a pattern without a whole quilt view.
    5. I don't need multiple options on the cover, but I think many people who buy patterns can't visualize as well as I do. I don't tend to buy patterns very much because I can imagine many variations on images I see in the free domain and can work out my own patterns. My limited experience with writing and selling my own patterns, indicates that most people don't think like I do.

  14. 1. Modern
    2. No I do not buy quilt patterns. I like to take inspiration and just wing it.
    3. I do buy quilt books.
    4. I like to see the whole quilt view.
    5. I think more than one option on the cover is a good idea and adds more perceived value to pattern.

  15. 1. I started quilting 20 years ago and all there was was traditional. I am now leaning toward modern.
    2. Yes I buy patterns, too many patterns. I will never make a quilt from all of my patterns.
    3. I buy books also but not as often as patterns. Easier to spend $8-10 on a pattern than $20-30 on a book( yes I know you get more petterns in a book and in the end it probably cost less but...)
4.I like both, but I really like flatout on a pattern so I can see the whole quilt.
5.Yes, I like seeing different color options.

    ReplyDelete
  16. 1. Do you prefer traditional or modern design?
mostly traditional. But I'll make just about anything

    2. Do you buy quilting patterns?
Rarely. I usually create my own. Yours are awesome, tho! and super well written!

    3. Do you buy quilting books?
No. Sometimes I get them as door prizes or something, but I really don't buy them.

    4. If you buy patterns, would you rather see the quilt represented totally "flat out" or would you prefer if it had an artistic, not totally visible presentation?
Artistic is fine. I'm pretty much going to modify the pattern anyway! :-D

    5. If you buy patterns, would you like to see more than one option on the cover?
I don't find that necessary. I feel like I can envision the different options.

  17. I try it all, but in my heart I think I am traditional.
    Yes, I buy patterns.
    Yes, I buy books.
Flat out to show the whole quilt on the pattern.
One option will do just fine.
    Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  18. 1. Both but lean toward traditional.
    2. Yes
    3. I have but mainly reference books that have patterns.
    4. Flat or hung on the wall
    5. One option on the front unless you put a thumbnail of another option in a corner. Sometimes I have (and my friends) a hard time visualizing color combinations.

    ReplyDelete
  19. 1. Do you prefer traditional or modern design? I have done traditional for the past 10 years but love the modern, simplistic patterns you have created.

    2. Do you buy quilting patterns? Yes and the fabric to go with the pattern. Quilt stores love me!

    3. Do you buy quilting books? Not as often as I would like. I tend to buy more magazines.

    4. If you buy patterns, would you rather see the quilt represented totally "flat out" or would you prefer if it had an artistic, not totally visible presentation? I am fine with both options but definitely want the "flat out" version so I can see how the fabrics will flow together.

    5. If you buy patterns, would you like to see more than one option on the cover? doesn't have to be on the cover - maybe on the back with the materials list. I do OK substituting other fabrics instead of what the picture shows.

Thanks for asking for my opinion! Lynn

  21. 1. Do you prefer traditional or modern design? I love modern quilts that show their roots - have elements of traditional quilts.
    2. Do you buy quilting patterns? Very rarely.
    3. Do you buy quilting books? Yes. To me it is more value for my money than individual patterns.
    4. If you buy patterns, would you rather see the quilt represented totally "flat out" or would you prefer if it had an artistic, not totally visible presentation? I like to see a flat out quilt but do like the artistic shots as well - both help sell.
    5. If you buy patterns, would you like to see more than one option on the cover? Yes, especially if it shows another color option.

I love the baby quilt shown above! Thanks for the opportunity to chime in (and to win!)

  23. I just visited this great store on my way home to MI. Sure wish I lived here!

    1.Traditional most of the time
2.Buy patterns? Yes. More than I'll ever use in this lifetime.
    3. Buy books? Not too many. Usually get them for gifts.
    4. I like a flat photo to see the whole quilt.
5.I do prefer more than one option, since diff fabrics make a totally different look.

Hope to visit this shop again if I ever travel your way. Thanks

  24. 1. both, my major requirement is "scrappy"

    2. I have never bought one and unless it had an aplique pattern or something, i dont think i would.

    3. I do buy books because i like the pictures and use them for inspiration

    4. both, usually its the posed shot that catches my interest, but i have to see a flat shot too

    5. color is what i struggle with so i always love different color options. As far as pattern options, i dont follow directions well, so i never make them like the pattern anyway!

hope this was helpful from a non pattern buyer!

    2. Do you buy quilting patterns? Yes

    3. Do you buy quilting books? Not very often

  26. Mostly traditional, but modern is good, too. Depends on my fabric and mood.

    I buy patterns.

I buy books, but I think a little longer before I commit to buying a book rather than a pattern. There needs to be 2-3 projects I like before I buy the book.

I like a flat photo of the whole quilt.

I would like to see more than one option. And inside the pattern I love seeing all the size options highlighted in the instructions.

  27. 1. Do you prefer traditional or modern design? Modern - I've seen enough patterns for traditional designs.

    2. Do you buy quilting patterns? Rarely.
    3. Do you buy quilting books? More often than patterns!
    4. Flat or draped? I insist on seeing a full representation of the quilt. If it's bunchy I won't buy. Your drapings are great - I can see 75% of the quilt and I'm sure that I like the shapes and proportions of the whole quilt.
    5. More than one option - I prefer it if I can see it in different sizes and maybe colors.

    ReplyDelete
  28. 1. Do you prefer traditional or modern design?
I don't have a preference. I choose designs based on my reaction to them, how they call to me, not the style.

    2. Do you buy quilting patterns?
Yes. You may not believe it but I just received a new pattern in the mail earlier in the week...and have already started working on it. the pattern? TV Dinner!!!

    3. Do you buy quilting books?
I've started to. I've only been quilting 2 years and have learned enough skills that I am now building a quilting library.

    4. Flat or draped?
I'm more the artistic eye type of buyer. I like to see care and detail to making the quilt look like a part of my life. Draped, wrapped around someone, hanging off a railing. These make it look appealing to me. Flat, well anyone can do flat, and I'm not the type of quilter to be concerned with seeing every corner. I can adapt if there is a detail that I later don't want to use.

    5. Options - I like seeing more then one option. Not because I need help picking out fabrics, I enjoy the fun of that myself. I like to see more of what the designer likes to do, see where their creative talents and colour eye take them. It makes me feel like the designer is someone I can work with (is that odd? we are working together if you think about it).

  29. #1. Prefer traditional, but love a new modern twist or color scheme.
#2. I buy TONS of patterns, more than I will ever make.
#3. I but TONS of quilt books. Again, more than I can ever use, but that doesn't stop me or slow me down.
#4. While I appreciate a more artsy presentation, I want to see the quilt flat out so I can see the pattern better.
#5, Yes, more photo options are great.

  30. 1. Do you prefer traditional or modern design? I prefer traditional

    2. Do you buy quilting patterns? Sometimes. It just depends on how well it is written.

    3. Do you buy quilting books? No.

    4. If you buy patterns, would you rather see the quilt represented totally "flat out" or would you prefer if it had an artistic, not totally visible presentation?

It doesn't matter to me how it's presented as long as I can see the design elements.

    5. If you buy patterns, would you like to see more than one option on the cover? It doesn't matter because I would like to see the sample and go from there.

  31. #1 I am a traditional quilter.

#2 Yes I buy quilting patterns

#3 Yes I buy quilting books

#4 I think I like to see it flat out, or at least enough of the pattern to see how it would look.

#5 Yes I would love to see more then one option.

  32. 1. I like modern with a traditional twist
    2. I buy lots of patterns--more than I probably will ever make.
    3. Oh, yes--lots of books, too.
4.I like both photographic approaches. But what I don't like are big surprises if the cover is "artistically" draped and the design inside has aspects that were hidden.

  34. 1. Do you prefer traditional or modern design?
Clean colors and modern fabrics in a more traditional style.

    2. Do you buy quilting patterns? Not often. I usually look at pictures of finished quilts and make up my own pattern. Usually results in over-cutting...

    3. Do you buy quilting books? I have received them as gifts, but have not purchased any.

    4. If you buy patterns, would you rather see the quilt represented totally "flat out" or would you prefer if it had an artistic, not totally visible presentation?
I think the main thing with patterns is that they're written in real-speak. I can't follow clothing patterns for the life of me, but if the pattern is a description of how to proceed, that's better than showing every single thing.

    5. If you buy patterns, would you like to see more than one option on the cover?
Probably. If it's just one image, it's hard to think about other color combinations.

    ReplyDelete
  35. 1. Do you prefer traditional or modern design?
I like the clean lines and some of the colors of modern but still very much like the traditional blocks.

    2. Do you buy quilting patterns?
I have not bought just a quilting pattern. however there are lots that I want to buy.

    3. Do you buy quilting books?
Oh yes! BUT, they have to have good information and good pictures. I learn by pictures not just written text.

    4. If you buy patterns, would you rather see the quilt represented totally "flat out" or would you prefer if it had an artistic, not totally visible presentation?
Needs to be flat to see how the entire quilt looks. An artistic view is somewhat nice at times, but I like seeing the entire quilt.

    5. If you buy patterns, would you like to see more than one option on the cover?
More then one option! It is sometimes hard to picture the quilt differently and therefore, I would not get it if I cannot see it another way.

    4. If you buy patterns, would you rather see the quilt represented totally "flat out" or would you prefer if it had an artistic, not totally visible presentation?
Both, although flat out is best.

    Definitely yes!

  37. 1. I lean more in the modern direction.
    2. Yes, I buy lots of them.
    3. Not nearly as much as patterns.
    4. I prefer flat out inside and artistic on the cover.
    5. I am open to anything as long as the color choices are pretty. Ugly fabric makes me not want to buy the pattern no matter how neat it is.

    ReplyDelete
  38. 1. Do you prefer traditional or modern design? I like both - it just depends on the individual pattern.

    2. Do you buy quilting patterns?
    Yes.

    3. Do you buy quilting books?
Once in a great while if it's something special.

    4. If you buy patterns, would you rather see the quilt represented totally "flat out" or would you prefer if it had an artistic, not totally visible presentation?

I prefer to see it flat out so I can see it in it's entirety.

    5. If you buy patterns, would you like to see more than one option on the cover? Sure. The more ideas, the better

  39. 1. Do you prefer traditional or modern design? I like both approaches. My preference depends on the person I am making the quilt for and how it will be used.

    2. Do you buy quilting patterns?
    yes.

    3. Do you buy quilting books?
Not too often. I may buy a book if it provides detailed directions to a process. An example might be hand quilting: what needles do you need; what type of thread; and how should your stitches look.

    4. If you buy patterns, would you rather see the quilt represented totally "flat out" or would you prefer if it had an artistic, not totally visible presentation?

I want to see the whole thing--guess that means flat out. Sometimes the artistic approach is good if you can get a good idea of the pattern.

    5. If you buy patterns, would you like to see more than one option on the cover? Love seeing different color options. Sometimes a store doesn't have a particular line of fabric. More options means more fabric purchases!

  41. 1. Do you prefer traditional or modern design? I am mostly a traditionalist but break outta the box sometimes.
    2. Do you buy quilting patterns? I do, love them.
    3. Do you buy quilting books? Yes but I have a "must like almost everyting in it" rule...
4.I like to see what the quilt will (possibly) look like, so flat out.
    5. Yes, I like to see more than one color way on a pattern also different sizes in the pattern.

    ReplyDelete
  42. 1. Both modern and traditional but I probably lean toward a more modern approach to traditional or modern. I kind of love it all.
    2. I'm new to quilting. I haven't bought patterns but I have bought books with patterns in them.
    3. Yes to quilting books provided there are several patterns in the book that appeal to me. I won't buy a book for a single pattern I like. Or at least I don't think I would.
    4. While I like photos of the quilts in various settings and stylized placements, I really NEED to see if flat out.
    5. I love to see more than one variation of a pattern. I need all the inspiration I can get! Sometimes a fabric doesn't do anything for me at all until I see it made into a quilt and sometimes a quilt pattern doesn't do it for me until I see it in a fabric that, for me, really brings it to life. I'm new at this. What can I say?

    ReplyDelete
  43. Thanks for asking! I like modern designs; buy patterns; buy books; flat, but sometimes artistic suffices; and variations of patterns are good.
