My Quilt Studio Unearthed..and a chance for Free Modern Quilt Relish Patterns

Marny here...I was "digging out" after all!
The before.  Looking towards the western and northern windows.
The after.  Look at all the open space.  Ooohhh...Aaahhh...

Looking back towards the door.  The windows are to my back as I take the picture.
My sewing table has moved from facing the western window to it's neighboring northern window.

Basket full of rulers, colored pencils, writing and marking tools, etc.
Gift from April hangs above!  (I have a fat cat remember.)
Bureau down below was in my children's nursery.  Can't let it go.
Before.  Cutting table being used for a multitude of things.   I count no less than three separate quilting projects and piles of paper and files created following market.

After.  Cutting table totally clean.  It is begging for me to cut my next project.
Two bulletin boards (that used to be stored on the floor) are hung and waiting for all the inspiring little tidbits I have already compiled.  More on that another time.
I used to store all my quilting books here.  Remember the unit, you'll see it repurposed in a minute.

Now my books and magazines and cds are shelved in this bookcase.
All my Modern Quilt Relish files are in a single place.  It feels so good.

See the reinvention of the old book case.  Target sells the black cloth "drawers" in two packs.
I had admired Jacquie Gering's pressing station in this Tallgrass Prairie post.  I forgot about it until I was standing in the middle of chaos and realized I rarely use the actual ironing board so, with good fortune on my side, my "big board" slid easily on top.
The before.  Patterns and covers to the left.  Boxes of patterns to right.

Now patterns and covers are at my fingertips!
Can you see these clever clips.  They are 3M Quick Clips 17505.  Think of all the thicker displays you might want to hang.  Including quilts???  3M adhesive supplies are all amazing and so removable.

A few small studies...a somewhat unsuccessful Diamond Head in the upper left and some other color/shape studies and improvisational piecing.  I have the design wall behind the ironing board, but can slide it out and place in front of the fabric shelves.  I'm excited I will be able to step back the length of the room (rather than the width) to judge my designs from now on.

My sewing studio is clean and organized.  It may not be all new and shiny, but I like to reuse the objects that have "lived" in my house for years and years.  The bulletin boards were used by my children.  The large bookcase belonged to my daughter.  It is still carefully labeled with her name.  Label maker fun at some point.  There is nothing quite like the power of knowing how to spell and a good label maker machine to a bright eight year old!
Admittedly I have created piles of books and albums and papers that need new homes.  But I am on a roll and heading into the next room makeover shortly.   My family is remaining patient.  But I better make more forward progress.

Actually I did revamp our screened in porch from uninviting to this welcoming retreat over the weekend.  The furniture, rug and pillows were on clearance at Target.  Timing is everything.

Jill and I are giving away three sets of our newest patterns.  Each winner will receive a copy of Recipe Cards and Taffy Twists.  All we ask for you to enter is to tell us whether or not you use Facebook and/or Pinterest.  We'd like to limit winners to the United States and Canada due to exorbitant postage to other wonderful parts of the world.  The entries will end at 5pm CST June 25th 2012.  Thank you!
See you next Tuesday!

  2. I am jealous of your new space - it is wonderful and I love the screened in porch. I have Facebook and do post - not every day, only when there is something exciting to announce like new grandchildren! I have visited Pinterest but am staying away from it - it appears very addictive.

  3. I do more Facebooking than I do Pinteresting ;) I like both sites though and maintain a presence on both. I use Facebook to keep track of companies and friends and family. I use Pinterest to keep track of what tutorials I want to be able to find again later or things I want to purchase later. I use Instagram a lot too, it's where I keep track of what people are working on in the crafty world :)

  4. Thanks for the pictures of your sewing room transformation -- looks like you have a lot of airy, move-around space now. The porch will be an idyllic retreat after a busy day of designing and stitching. I check Facebook at least once a day. I've not jumped into Pinterest yet. I tried to get a copy of Recipe Cards at my local quilt shop over the weekend, and they were all gone...

  7. I LOVE Recipe Cards! Almost ready to buy it. I use neither Facebook nor Pinterest - they suck away too much time, and privacy concerns.

  8. I use Pinterest as a filing system. I have a FB page but only so that I can keep an eye on my children (and they know it). Thanks for the giveaway.

  9. Your organized sewing studio is very inspiring to me. Mine's not so bad right now but not so good. After seeing yours, I'll be tidying it up later this week.

Yes, I do use Facebook and Pinterest. Interesting you should ask, as I use Pinterest mostly to organize ideas for quilts I want to make and recipes I want to try.

  10. My goodness you must feel wonderful. What an accomplishment! I organized my fabric a few weeks ago...and so far, so good! Clutter creeps in, but fabric is all folded away at least. I do not use Facebook or pinterest. I simply can't spend another minute on the computer...five minutes turns in. Forty five before I know it.

  11. Your studio looks great! How fun to finally have it all lined out. I use FB to mostly keep up with family & old friends with a few quilting related things on there too. Pinterest I use for my own post it note board. I don't follow a lot of people, just those that have the same design sensibility as me. It is mostly for my own reference so I can keep track of interesting things I see around blogland & the internet.

I use both Facebook & Pinterest but mainly Facebook now. A year ago at this time my answer would have been the opposite.

  16. Your sewing room redo, is inspiring. Love the clips idea. Pinterest is fun to meander through, but in small doses. Too easy to loose track of time there.

    1. Thanks for the comment. The clips were just sitting in my cupboard. I must have bought them because they looked like they had potential, and then promptly forgot about them. Who knows how long they had been in there. But you can bet I will be buying more of them for quilt display.

  18. Your sewing room makeover is wonderful! Such an improvement. When we get into our new house (loading the truck in KC today for the move!) I'll be doing much the same kind of stuff, but I need to buy some new pieces. I'm admiring that sewing machine table. Could you please tell me the brand? Thanks for sharing your sewing space, and lovely new screen porch. That's called a lanai in Florida. I'm taking a class called "How to Make Your Lanai an Extension of Your Home." Thanks for your pattern giveaway and the chance to win. Great stuff in this post!

    1. Hi Linda,

You are certainly busy! Good luck with the move. The weather is kinder for loading today than in the past couple of days, at least it is here.
Tonight is DMMQG. We'll miss you.

Did you know I grew up in Hawaii? Lanai is a Hawaiian term for a covered porch of any kind. (it is also one of the awesome islands) The Floridians must have borrowed the term. :-)

My sewing machine table is a Horn cabinet. What you see in the picture is the sewing machine table and a separate set of drawers on casters. The sewing machine table has a pneumatic lift for lowering the machine down to be flush with the surface. It comes with an insert so it could just be a huge table when you need it. The back half of the table can either be extended (as it is in the picture) or not.

Wishing you a smooth and safe move.

      Marny

  19. Your sewing room is very inspiring!! It is our plan to put an addition onto our house this summer/fall. I have plans for a sewing room, so your room has given me some ideas...Thank you for sharing...

I use both Facebook and Pinterest.

  21. I use them so minimally that I would have to say not really.

  22. I would say that I am very much a newbie at both Facebook and Pinterest, but I do have the desire to learn more and use both more effectively. My biggest issue with Pinterest is that I click on a link, then another, then another and soon I am far away from where I started. But, I do find new things I may not have seen otherwise. Sew it's all good in the end.
