jill here...Many companies have been generous in sharing fabric samples. Earlier this year, Moda Fabrics sent us some darling Layer Cake kids prints in the "Oink A Doodle Moo" collection by Jenn Ski and "Snap Pop" by Sandy Gervais. We want to share them while they are still current!

- What size of baby quilt do you like to make?
- If you have completed a baby quilt in the past year, what color scheme inspired you? If you haven't had a chance to complete one, what color scheme would you choose.
- When making a baby quilt do you make the design of your choice or do you let the "mom" request the design and/or fabric?
Entries end at 5 pm Central Time Monday, June 3rd, 2013. The two winners will be announced next Tuesday.
Till then...
Size varies usually around 40"x40" for newborn.
ReplyDeleteThe last color scheme was gray and blue with hipster prints from the Geekly Chic line.
I like to make my quilts surprises. I just try to keep an open ear to what the mom likes or what theme she is Doing with the nursery and go from there!
Thanks so much for doing this contest! :)
I like to make more of a crib size/lay on the floor quilt about 36x50. Something the infant can grow into.
ReplyDeleteMy latest baby quilt was a mix of rose/pink with a punch of lime green. I like to add a bright splash for interest.
I do a mix of design choice. I try to select things that I know flow with mom's style, but I have also asked for some minor input as well such as, bright or muted, modern or vintage. I've found if I have the recipient select everything it ends up feeling like work to me.
I normally make crib size quilts. The last one I made was a disappearing 9 patch and was the choice of the future mother.
ReplyDeleteI like rectangular quilts, so I tend to make them approximately 36" x 48", depending on the block size. I've made two baby quilts in the last year from a layer cake by Me and My Sister. I can't remember exactly which one, but it had lots of bright colors and white. I made designs that I wanted to make because they were a surprise for the mom.
ReplyDelete45-50square. My most recent baby quilt was a rainbow chevron. I usually pick the design and ask the mom about colors etc. for choosing fabric.
ReplyDeleteI like to make 42" by 50" baby quilts.
ReplyDeleteI usually ask the mom what colors she likes. For the last quilt, the mom I was making the quilt for liked Eric Carle books and I chose strong colors such as blues, greens, reds, oranges, and yellows. I designed the quilt and chose the fabrics but did show them to the mom to make sure I was on track.
I agree with Elizabeth. Thanks for doing this contest.
I like the 40 x 40 size, too, but want to please mom so do as requested.
ReplyDeleteThe last baby quilt I did was for a nephew my sister adopted from Russia. It was lots of boy prints - trucks, tractors, navy blues, greens - fun bright colors.
I usually pick the design unless it is for one of my own kids - then I hand them the magazine and wait to see what I am doing and in what colors.
I would love to win the Oink a Doodle Moo prints - my son is dating a young lady with a 2 1/2 year old son and he would love those prints.
Lynn Scarlett
Size - 40" square or 40X48"
ReplyDeleteThe one I just finished was blue print, yellow, and peach.
I pick the design. Only close family can suggest fabric (like the current suggestion was hedgehogs in any color).
I like to try to make a larger baby sized quilt, one that can be used for a few years. The last one I made was about 45x55. The last baby quilt I used was for my husbands co-worker and I let him pickout the fabrics. He chose the Bearenstein Bears charm pack and I pulled a few additional fabrics to go with it. In general, if I am making a baby quilt and I know the Mom Iget a general idea on colors and traditional/modern from her then go from there.
ReplyDeleteI like to make my baby quilts 45" x 45", my most recent baby quilt was finished in March, 2013 it was pink similar to the Snap Pop Layer cake but animals themed. I like to make them as a surprise but really try to hone in on the new mom and dad and what their likes are to come up with the theme.
ReplyDeleteMy baby quilts tend to be smaller for the newborn. Kids love to use them for their "babies" later as they grow. My quilts are generally 35 x35 or 40x45 thereabouts.
ReplyDeleteI tend to make my own design from my stash of cute baby prints!!
The last one I did was for a friend of my daughters and was from a set of low volume prints of yellow, grey and cream I was wanting to see together. They were incredible!!!
When I make a baby quilt I like to try to stay around 50x60. The last baby quilt I made out of lime green and blue fabric. Typically I make the quilt and don't ask what color scheme the family is using. Paint on a wall changes and it is impossible to get the right shade of color. By making the quilt whatever color I want they can enjoy it for years to come and not just until they change the color of the nursery.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the chance to win....I usually make a baby quilt about 40x50. I choose the fabric, pattern and color scheme but I do base it on the likes of the mom and what sex the baby is. I like to have the freedom to create something but like to know it will be pleasing to the family!
ReplyDeleteI usually make the quilt around 45X60 depending on the design or block size. I normally tend to gravitate towards brighter colors and stay away from pales and pastels. I make what I'm in the mood for rather than what the mother may ask for. Normally I think my experience is better with that decision, than a non-quilter's choice. Mom's are always excited with any handmade items they receive.
ReplyDeleteI usually make 40 x 40 or 48 x 48. Lately I'm really liking anything with turquoise. If I know the Mom real well I'll ask about the nursery colors. Otherwise I'll just try to find out if it's a boy or a girl.
ReplyDeleteHi!!! I have not made a baby quilt yet!!!! New to quilting!!!! But I have to get one made for a girl by Sept!!! Because I will be getting a new gran daughter!!! I want to make it crib size!!! Probably some pink in it!!!! Thanks for the give away!!!
ReplyDeleteI make many baby quilts for charity ranging in size from 39x45 to 45x60. I'm not a "girly girl" so I tend to the brighter colors in the spectrum and mostly never use pastels. That being said, if I know the intended recepient I do try to coordinate to their chosen color scheme.
ReplyDeleteI usually do about 36x45. I use whatever fabric line grabs my attention. My last 2 were from Riley Blake's Willow. I don't really ask, I like to have a few made up. But if someone asks I would certainly use their choice! Great giveaway!
ReplyDeleteI like to make crib quilt around 42x50.
ReplyDeleteI finished two quilts. One I was given a race car theme and I chose the design that matched the colors of the crib sheet. The other was for a "we don't want to know what the sex is until it arrives baby" so I chose the colors and the design. I went to the quilt store to get inspired for the colors.
I also add the pertinent information like name, date and time of birth, and the height and weight.
mine was 40 x 40 it was made with Lotta Jansdotta bella and it came out beautifully. I let them tell me the colours, am doing a Michael Miller citron and grey right now they chose the colour
ReplyDeleteI'm making one now with Giddy charm squares as I liked the red & aqua prints. It will be about 38 x 48 and I usually choose the pattern. Thank you for the giveaway.
ReplyDeletemaryellen1304@hotmail.com
My favourite size is 40 by 40 or maybe 45 by 60. I like bright colours. right now I'm making one in orange, lime green and black and white for a baby coming in August.
ReplyDelete36" X 48" is my standard size baby quilt. Mostly I make baby quilts to donate, so they're always in boy colors. Boys are often underserved by us female quilters. But happily, there are two girls expected in our family this year, so I'll get to make girl quilts for the first time in nearly four years! I'm very excited about that. Thanks for the chance to win your giveaway.
ReplyDeleteI like oversize baby quilts (45 X60) at least. The last 2 baby quilts I made were blue teddy bear with disappearing 9 patches. I had collected several patterns of teddy bears and I wanted to use them. If I'm making a quilt for someone I will ask if they have specific colors in mind or do they want a blue or pink one. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteI don't really have a set size. As far as the color scheme- the most recent quilt I'm getting ready to start is for my first grandchild. I sent some links for various patterns and let them choose the pattern and then sent some various links for fabric lines and let them choose that too. The color scheme is aqua, yellow and grey.
ReplyDeleteI make mostly crib quilts in varying sizes to give away. Most often I don't know the family who will get the quilt. I try not to make the same style twice so I am always learning something new. Currently working on a 'wonky' quilt inspired by andiejohnsonsews modern scrappy quilt in primary colors.
ReplyDeleteI usually make my baby quilts about 38 x 48 so I can use the full width of yardage for the back and don't have to piece it. I have been making my quilts out of charm squares lately. I use a 6 x 6 layout and add a tiny inner border and an outer border. These go together fast and I love how the colors are all ready picked out for me. I don't ask the mom to be about colors. Except for my daughter's children. I have made Quilts for Kids and they pick the colors.

I have 2 usual sizes: about 36" square, or about 36x42 rectangle. I generally do gender-neutral colors, even when the baby has already been born. Last one completed was a paletter based on chartreuse and teal. I generally choose the colors and design myself. No one seems unhappy yet :-)
ReplyDeleteMy baby quilts vary in size but are usually about 45x60. If I don't know the mother's taste I try to find out what the nursery is like. The last one I made was with pinks, mauve and green with a touch of yellow.
ReplyDeleteI'm planning my first baby quilt and will be starting it in the next week or two. For my first, I'm probably going to go with 36 x 40 for the size. I'm usually a fan of bright colors but gor this one I was inspired to use soft, natural shades of peach, green and brown. The mom is very outdoorsy and I think she'll like this color scheme. She won't have input on the design because it's going to be a surprise, but I'm definitely planning it with her tastes in mind. Thanks for the giveaway!
ReplyDeleteI made 2 baby quilts only a month or two ago. One was blues/greens, the other was red and yellow. I used a Noah's Ark panel, cut out the blocks in the panel, and made the printed block the center of a churn dash block, then sashed and bordered the quilts. I generally make a crib quilt size, with the mattress size plus several inches.
ReplyDeleteI am hand-sewing a binding on newest grand-daughter's baby quilt as we speak, approx 45 x 60. It was a kit of 30s triangles. I embellished the kit by adding side borders and large (not jumbo) rick rack. The backing fabric is a juvenile teddy bear print with the 30s peaches and aquas and yellows. I've always made baby quilts of my choice, although the last 4 I've made have been OK'd by the moms. I'm learning that some young parents like to have a vote in what you are giving their little one.
ReplyDeleteLove that fabric by Jenn Ski! I usually make my baby quilts 40" x 55" (a little larger for baby to toddle around with as she grows). And I choose the design but usually try to go by their nursery color preference.
ReplyDeleteI make baby quilts for a Women's Health clinic that gives a new quilt to every mom that delivers with them. I make them all with flannel backing, so my patchy front depends on the flannel I have for the back! Usually they are about 40 by 40. I choose a pattern that I want to try out. The last one was was mostly white, pink and black in kind of a crazy quilt design because I had a ice cream cone flannel with those colors for the back. Making them for a charitable group gives me a chance to try something new.
ReplyDeleteLove to make crib-size quilts. My favorite one this last year was a lavender and gray combination. It turned out great! I sometimes try to find out the nursery color scheme, but more often than not I make my quilts fitting mom's personality/taste.
ReplyDeleteAbout 40" x 50" works well. Love lime green and light gray quilt combos, although I have pink and white HST quilt cut and ready to go, and I think it will be cute! I'd ask what their nursery colors are, but I make my own design.
ReplyDeleteI usually make small quilts that can first be used as floor sitters and then carry around quilts - 40 to 45 inches, depending on the pattern fit. I like brights but if the mother has a special preference, I might-might-might go that way.
ReplyDeleteI have not made a baby quilt this past year. But when I do I like to make them just the right size for the crib. I usually measure the top of the crib mattress and use this measurement as the guide for the whole new quilt. Most times, my clients, suggest a color scheme they are looking for and then they let me 'play my magic' to make a one of kind baby quilt. Thanks for the chance to win!

I make baby quilts that are more toddler-sized - 40x60 or so. I often will ask what the colors that the mom wants are, and then pick a pattern that works with the fabric I choose. I've stopped matching the baby's room - I want the quilts to be dragged around, not placed carefully on the back of a rocking chair!
ReplyDeleteI enjoy making crib size baby quilts and have made several this past year for community service. When doing this, I will pick just about any color scheme since they will be for both boys and girls. The organization that distributes them will then have color choices. These layer cakes would be just the item to finish a most delightful baby quilt.
ReplyDeleteI usually make mine 48 X 48. I mainly make baby quilts so I work with all colors. Today I am working on a quilt called "Ribbon" which is for a boy and is made of Riley Blake fabric with cars, and stars. I am also working on a quilt for a girl which is made of the citron and gray patterns by Michael Miller. I usually find the fabric first, then decide on the pattern after I find the fabric. Most of the time I make my own patterns because I can't find what I want.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the giveaway!
I try to always make baby quilts 40" or less wide, that way I don't have to piece backing. I like using bright colours for baby quilts, although I have done some with "themes" to match nurseries or parents' favourites. I usually choose my own colours, but I have worked with moms to design/pick preferred colours. I like making baby quilts, not only because they are special and usually quick, but they also give me a chance to try new techniques on a smaller scale.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the giveaway!
@CoralQuilts
I have finished three baby quilts in the last year, all VERY different from each other! One was inspired by a multicolored (kind of autumn shades), uneven, abstracted, linear "leaf" print. I pulled out a bunch of batiks that matched and away I went. The second was inspired by a print fabric as well, but this one was a vintage 1950's print in brown, turquoise, and orange on white. I used mostly solids in those colors to coordinate with the print. The third was made from leftover blocks from another project - very scrappy - in a range of what I call bright pastels. I love to make big baby quilts, usually at least 45 inches wide and often 50 or more inches long. I want that kid to be able to use the quilt for a long time! I definitely make my own decisions about the colors and design, although I may be influenced by the colors of the baby room (if I know what it is!)

I haven't made any baby quilts this year, but I do enjoy making "baby" sized quilts that are lap size 60x50 or so. If I were asked to make a baby quilt, I'd love to use the blue colorways of Backyard Baby and Les Amies lines because they are so precious! Otherwise I'd let the mom pick what colors they like and work with that. Thanks for the chance to win!
ReplyDeleteWhat size? I've only made one. 33x44.
ReplyDeleteWhat color scheme inspired you?
I made it to use in my little car, 2006 white VW GTI with charcoal leather seats, red brake calipers and a big red smile. The quilt is gray, red, black and white.
As a recent quilter, I have yet to make a gift baby quilt but I would most likely take stock of the mom's style and nursery choices and then make my own fabric choices.

to me
Size - I generally make baby quilts approximately 36 x 45.
I pick the pattern and fabric. Most quilts do not touch baby's body ( ! ) so I generally make "tummy time" quilts
Because of that, I tend to make them of brights with some kind of tactile part to it. My most recent is for my soon-to-be-granddaughter - 3 dimensional flowers in bright dots.
Hope I win!!!!!!!!
Love your patterns
Thanks for the chance to win. I make baby quilts 40" x 50" to take advantage of the crib size batting dimensions. My colors depend on who I'm making it for and what they've requested.
ReplyDeleteI like to make mine approx 42square or 42x50, I have one on the chopping block atm that is pinks/reds with a little bright blue and I like to pick my own designs as I like to try new things im not sure about on a small scale :)
ReplyDelete4dvvs1@gmail.com
I usually make baby quilts less than the width of the fabric on the back so about 40-45 inches, I love the look of square quilts and I like the way the blocks or design works in a square. Last baby quilt was orange turquoise and pink, I love bright colors for baby quilts, and scrappy is best. I tend to find non quilters are really very cautious about colors, I might ask what their favorite color is, but they seem to be happy with a surprise.
ReplyDeleteI usually make baby quilts about 40" x 50" so that I can use one width of fabric for the backing. I usually pick the pattern for the quilt but I try to match the colours or theme of the baby's room, if I know what is. I love to use simple, modern patterns. One of the last baby quilts I made has horizontal stripes with charm squares in green, yellow and orange on a white background.
ReplyDeleteI would love to win some fabric!
Hi, Mine are usually 40 X 50 and usually come from a quilt
ReplyDeleteI have seen made up. I have many ideas, now just need to have the need to make more. I really like the snap pop fabric. Thanks Dianne djbs1@consolidate.net
I like to make baby quilts about a standard crib size ( about 36x50) so baby can grow into the quilt and love it for many years. My preference is playful bright primary colors with big contrasts but I am guided by the preferences of Mom- to-Be, both in color and in style.
