New winners and another opportunity to win Picnic!

Season to Taste baby quilt from Picnic, by Modern Quilt Relish
limited kits available at Quilting Connection

This week's winners are Diane W. and Linda H.  (Linda H. can you email us please?)  It is perfect that one winner chose improvisational piecing without a formal layout and one chose alternative blocks in a nontraditional layout.

Responses to the questions we posed about blocks and layout sorted out in the following way:

  • Recognizable but reinterpreted traditional blocks in a traditional layout"?  Five
  • Alternative blocks with a nontraditional layout?  Seven
  • Improvisational piecing without a formal layout?  Seven
  • Independent responses-one, thanks for the sweet comment Char!

Love that there is a range of style represented!  Again your responses were pretty evenly spread.  Interesting.

We are giving away two more copies of Picnic next Tuesday!  Just leave a comment about what inspires you to quilt.  This is an open ended question. We don't want to lead you one direction or another, we're just very interested in where or how or when or who or whatever!  Have fun with it!

Till Tuesday...

  1. I'm inspired to quilt by seeing the amazing things that other people make - in the guild and on Flickr. I'm also inspired by art and architecture and actually, the Bible.
You ladies and all the quilts you have made are quite inspiring!

  3. I am inspired to quilt for lots of reasons. If I have a bad day at work I like to go into my studio to clear my head. No one in my sewing room tells me what to do or yells at me. Sewing feeds my soul. If I see a pretty new fabric that inspires me. The colors in my son's room have inspired me to make him a new quilt for his bed. It is waiting to be quilted. After the first of the new year I am inspired to make more quilts from the fabric that is already in my stash. I have cut out two quilts out of that fabric so far. Seeing quilts that other friends make also inspires me. I will often ask what the pattern is called and go out and buy it. If I were to be locked in my house for months on end I would have enough fabric to keep me busy. I am inspired by the simple act of creating. I can create beautiful things by cutting and sewing straight lines. That inspires me.

  4. Sometimes fabric will inspire me. Other times a pattern will. Or just seeing other's quilts will get my mind going.

  5. Seeing what other people are making is a great inspiration for quilting and I have to say, I've gotten into Pinterest a bit more than I ever thought I would because there's so many wonderful ideas and examples of beautiful quilts on there that I would love to make someday.

  6. You have indeed posed an open-ended question. I will try to be succinct. First, I adore putting fabrics together and picturing in my mind what the project will look like. Lastly, I am always amazed at how spectacular the quilt top looks after going through the evolution process. It is amazing how the piecing of the fabrics always brings out the best quality of each fabric - and that they all "go together" in the end. BTW, your small "cubes" turquoise/aqua * orange quilt on display at QC reminds me so much of sushi rolls!

  7. I'm inspired by seeing what other bloggers are making and also what other quilters are posting on Flickr. I'm also inspired when I see patterns or shapes in every day things such as floor tiles or upholstery. Even fabric designs will inspire me or spark an idea. Sometimes seeing things in catalogs and magazines will give me an idea for something, too. Inspiration is everywhere.

  8. My quilting inspiration has changed as I've gotten older. Originally, I quilted to use leftover fabrics from garments I made. Later, Show and Tell projects at guild inspired me to take the leap to use patterns and make a "planned quilt" with coordinated colors and a consistent design. More recently my inspiration comes from knowing that I can sew fabric together and make something that someone can enjoy either as art or for warmth. I get ideas from everything around me...from floor tiles to Pinterest. What an evolution from the first quilt I made!!

  9. i'm not certain what inspires me, other than i simply *have to*. i take great inspiration from the seasons, and my boys, the ebb and flow of life.

  10. I grew up doing a multitude of crafts with my mother. Somehow I ended up doing financial things for work. Quilting allows the creative side of me an outlet. Blogs are a huge inspiration to me and keep me updated as to what is going on the quilting world.

  11. I am inspired by others, nature, architecture, color, just about everything. It is the transition from brain to fabric that I run into trouble. I just keep trying new things and hope to find my place.

  12. I love to flip through quilting magazines and see the beautiful quilts that others have made. If there is one that especially catches my eye, I head to my local quilt shop and find inspirational fabrics that I can visualize as part of the quilt. It is a great joy to see it all come together just the way I pictured it. I love a new challenge - I recently made an apple core quilt from flannel with chicken fabric - I can't wait to see it. I love to give the quilt to someone who will cherish it as much as I did when putting it together.

  13. I'm pretty much all about function & beauty. It does not interest me to make something to sit on a shelf. I do like sewing for charities. I'm influenced by ideas I see on blogs like yours.

  15. My guild inspires me. I also quilt because I want to leave something beautiful behind when I'm gone someday.

  16. Most of my quilts are inspired by 'what if...'. What if this print got cut up and used in that pattern? Or that one? And if I start with this pattern, what will it look like if...I change it to a different background? If I reverse darks and lights? Make it pink?

  17. I'm definitely inspired by what others do but I'm also inspired by designs I see in things around me. I definitely notice geometric patterns more than I used to. Thanks for the chance.

  18. I'm inspired by the world around me and my need to get away from it too. quilting allows me to open up in ways work will not and work allows me resources to buy what I desire for my creativity. All works in it's own way to allow me to be inspired.

  21. Everything inspires me to quilt! i have an insatiable hunger for looking at quilts--old and new! I know a design is good when it makes me want to start cutting and sewing, so pattern is definitely my main inspiration. But then there's fabric--I see a new print and start thinking about how to use it in a quilt.

  22. Show & Tell always inspires me. The colors and the design lines get my attention. It doesn't make me want to make the exact same thing I see. It makes my mind work on ideas.
